Alona Rothwell and Eli Slavens - Student Athletes of the Week
Hackett Hornets, Alona Rothwell and Eli Slavens have been named the Student Athletes of the Week by Arkansas Valley Electric and Wave Rural Connect.
Alona, a senior guard for the Lady Hornets, has attended Hackett since kindergarten.
Alona beamed with pride when asked how she felt about her team, saying, "It's great; we have a great environment every time we play and love these girls like no other."
She shared that one of the team's most significant achievements this season was an unexpected upset against Booneville. Alona said, "Our last game at Booneville was unexpected. It's the first time we've beaten Booneville since I have been playing, and to make that comeback in my senior year was amazing."
Alona finishes, looking towards the future. "I expect to keep improving. I hope we make it to regionals and keep going."
Eli is a senior point guard for the Senior High Hornets and has attended Hackett since kindergarten. From little league to his senior year, he has always been proud to play for and represent Hackett.
He shared his gratitude for the chemistry that he and his teammates share. Eli explained, "Most of the kids on this team have grown up playing together since the first and second grades. We know how each other practice and play. We know that we are a family at the end of the day."
"I see our team going all the way to state and maybe winning it." He continued, "We look up at those [state championship] banners and recognize that we have a shot this year. We're not gonna take that for granted."
Congratulations, Alona and Eli, and good luck to the Hackett Hornets in their matchup against Cossatot River tonight!
